The Thesaurus of ERIC Descriptors, Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms, and Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) of the National Library of Medicine are examples of controlled database thesauri. Electronic thesaurus files are useful in searching databases, allowing direct search capabilities from thesaurus links. Descriptors, in a database thesaurus file, show subject relationships through conventions such as “see” and “see also” references and, in a hierarchical arrangement, indicate broader and narrower terms. Such descriptors, if used consistently within a database, provide controlled subject and name indexing and access. Predetermined subject descriptors, headings, and/or names describe the content of information items. Controlled Descriptors, Thesauri, and Authority Files
